Kaiyuan Tongbao is a copper coin cast in the Tang Dynasty. In the early Tang Dynasty, the Sui Five Zhu was used, which was light and confusing. In the fourth year of Wude, Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty (AD 621), in order to rectify the chaotic currency system, the Sui coins were abolished, and the "Kaiyuan Tongbao" was forged following the strict norms of the five baht in the Western Han Dynasty, replacing the five baht left
The Book of the Old Tang Dynasty · Food and Goods Annals records that "(Tang Dynasty) Emperor Gaozu ascended the throne and still used the five baht coin of the Sui Dynasty. In July of the fourth year of Wude (AD 621), the five baht coin was abolished, and the Kaiyuan Tongbao coin was launched. It was eight minutes in diameter, two baht and four li in weight, with ten wen weighing one or two, and a thousand wen weighing six jin and four liang." The text of the coin was written by calligrapher Ouyang Xun, with the face character "Kaiyuan Tongbao", and the shape of the Kongyuan coin still used in Qin Dynasty.
Kaiyuan Tongbao was the first currency in the Tang Dynasty. Due to its reasonable quality, proper currency control, and exquisite workmanship, the coins are deeply loved by the people. Kaiyuan Tongbao has become a part of the money of the Great Five Emperors, which has the effect of warding off evil spirits and boosting wealth.
In addition, many people think that Kaiyuan Tongbao is the money with a year title, because it is wrong that Li Longji, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang of the Tang Dynasty, has a year title of Kaiyuan. Kaiyuan Tongbao is a non annual coin, which was cast in the early Tang Dynasty. It was inscribed by Ouyang Xun himself. Ouyang Xun is a figure in the early Tang Dynasty, while Li Longji was born in the flourishing Tang Dynasty. The age difference between the two people is more than 100 years. From the perspective of age, Ouyang Xun could not inscribe Li Longji's coin. And Li Longji's designation of the year as Kaiyuan was purely coincidental.

Our company recently collected "Kaiyuan Tongbao Group I", with a diameter of 12.4mm and a weight of 11.2g. This coin is naturally coated, with clear patterns and exquisite appearance. Copper Kaiyuan Tongbao is a relatively common type of Kaiyuan Tongbao. Due to its long history and many coins unearthed, most of them are rusted and severely worn. In the early Tang Dynasty, the outer walls were relatively thin, but after the Middle Tang Dynasty, the outer walls became wider and thicker. Generally, Kaiyuan Tongbao has a thin inner wall, round and square. Qian Wen is an official script with four characters: "Kaiyuan Tongbao". The character "Yong" has a very distinctive head, which combines the characteristics of seal script. Kaiyuan Tongbao coins have an epoch-making position in the history of Chinese coins. 'Kaiyuan' means opening up a new era; 'Tongbao' refers to the passage of treasure goods. The epoch-making status of the Kaiyuan coin is reflected in the fact that before the Tang Dynasty, coins were mostly named after their shape or weight, such as knife coins, Wuzhu coins, etc. Since the Kaiyuan coin, they have been renamed as "treasure", "Tongbao", "Yuanbao", etc. Kaiyuan Tongbao was the main currency in circulation during the 290 years of the Tang Dynasty's rule, and it also influenced the shape, style and decimal balance of Chinese coins for more than 1000 years. The casting and circulation of Kaiyuan Tongbao in the Tang Dynasty has epoch-making significance in the history of the development of the coin shape in China.

Kaiyuan Tongbao is called Kaiyuan Money or Tongbao Money for short. Kaiyuan means "founding the country and laying the foundation"; Tongbao is the connotation of "circulating treasure goods".
